Шаннон, обратившись от Талмуда к Каббале, от отчаяния взывает к Дьяволу. Он предлагает свое тело, душу, разум и знания в обмен на деву Лею. Он умирает в синагоге, сраженный молнией. Перед свадьбой Лея идет на его могилу. Шаннон вселяется в нее как «диббук», дух-скиталец, овладевающий телом человека, которого любил при жизни. «Я буду носить в себе обе наших души», - говорит Лея. На брачной церемонии она кричит жениху: «Не ты мой суженый!» Словно медиум, она начинает говорить голосом Шаннона. Поняв, что перед ними диббук, гости разбегаются. Зендер просит помощи у знаменитого раввина из Мирополя и признается ему, что нарушил клятву, данную покойному другу. Ровно в полночь Зендер является пред судом Торы. Суд объявляет, что Зендер не может быть признан виновным, поскольку клятва касалась еще не родившегося человека. Ниссон, по этому случаю явившись из царства мертвых, не согласен с вердиктом. На процессе раввин неоднократно требует, чтобы диббук покинул тело Леи. Тот отказывается, и тогда раввин налагает на него анафему и изгоняет его силой. Диббук говорит Лее, что, раз уж он обязан покинуть ее тело, он заберет с собой ее душу. Лея соглашается отдать ему душу и умирает.► В то время как в Нью-Йорке Сидни М. Из всех этих фильмов наиболее широкую известность получил Диббук. Фильм, вдохновленный знаменитой пьесой Ански, не отличается ярко выраженной театральностью. В нем чувствуется некоторое запоздалое влияние экспрессионизма (см. декорации кладбища), но есть зато и сцены, снятые на натуре. Он сделан в примитивном, но искреннем и трогательном стиле, и стремится не столько показать различные забавные стороны еврейского быта (как это происходит в большинстве фильмов на идиш), сколько воплотить мистическую легенду, где понятие судьбы влияет на все основные события. Речь идет о личной судьбе - мстительная, она заставляет сыновей и дочерей расплачиваться за ошибки отцов. Несмотря на скромный арсенал средств, фильм рассказывает эту легенду, стараясь вместить в нее весь мир: песни и танцы, сказки и призраки приносят в действие фильма всю мудрость и все безумие человека и взывают одновременно и к видимому, и к невидимому мирам (которые, словно в картинах Mуpнау, всегда существуют рядом и проникают друг в друга). Отметим, к слову, что Михаль Важински (1904–1965) начинал в кинематографе как ассистент Мурнау. В отличие от Йозефа Грина, гражданина Америки, приезжавшего в Польшу каждое лето лишь на съемки, Важински провел в Польше большую часть своей режиссерской карьеры (1929–1939), затем работал в Италии как художественный руководитель проектов и наконец стал вице-президентом испанской студии «Productions Bronston».N.В. В 1968 г. в честь 50-летия основания в Москве театра «Хабима» (на сцене которого в 1922 г. Вахтангов под руководством Станиславского поставил пьесу Ански) появился на свет 1-й в истории немецко-израильский фильм. Это осовремененная экранизация пьесы, под названием Диббук (The Dybbuk), снятая Иваном Ленгиэлем.
